Out of My Mind

Digging out

I gave it my best shot, but I think I'll need to wait for the rest to melt.

Snowmaggedaon 2012 - Olympia, WA

Last night we shoveled the snow of the back deck. When I woke up this morning I thought I had dreamed it. I glanced out the window and the snow was even deeper than it was the day before. Here are some more snapshots from about 7 a.m.

  1. Back deck. I haven't measured it yet, but I'm guessing 14 inches.
  2. Pergola over the driveway. We haven't touched this snow, and it's about 2 feet deep.
  3. Front porch. The two feet of snow on the left is covering the roof of Marshmallow Mom's studio.
  4. I think that's my car.

Snowpocolypse 2012 - Olympia, WA

We woke to 12 inches of snow this morning. The forecast is for more today and even more on Wednesday. We've had a few reprieves from snow fall and the temps are just above freezing, so you know what that means. Melt and freeze overnight for a nice icy patch in the morning. So I'm sticking it out at home glad we have power and cable to connect to the outside world.

  1. Snow level on our deck railing
  2. Deck chairs with nice pillowy snow cushions
  3. Back deck
  4. Overlooking our neighbors yard
  5. DeHart home from the end of the driveway
(100 feet of driveway x 10 feet wide x 1 foot deep = 1,000 cubic feet of snow to shovel. I think not)
  6. Sign post out front with an Elvis doo

First Snow 2012

Finally, it feels like winter in Olympia. We got our first snow today and went sledding on the golf course. Take a look the wondrous world of white at our home on Delphi.

A poem for Elanor

My third poem features my daughter Elanor's passion for origami.
A poem for Elanor

Elanor is my youngest daughter. She’s a hands-on kinda kid who loves to do crafts, bake, and most importantly, do Origami. She has a huge collection of papers in all colors and sizes and a library of how-to books on Origami. What she can’t find in her books, she’ll hunt down online, watching Youtube videos to figure out a new trick or two with folding paper. I’m not sure where her passion for folding paper comes from, but I think the documentary Between the Folds (check it out on Netflix. It’s f...

Arachnophobia by Marcus DeHart

From the Chronicles of Parker Envoy

“The lasagna’s going to be ready in fifteen minutes,” said Parker’s Mommy crossing the living room, her heels clip clopping across the hardwood floor. She paused to smile at Parker and tousle his hair. She did the same to Parker’s daddy who chuckled and brushed her hand away.

Check out this short story I posted on the WritersPub.com. Let me know what you think.

A Poem for Beth: B.A.D. Heart Art

My latest creation
A Poem for Beth: B.A.D. Heart Art

Here’s a poem I wrote for my oldest daughter. At the age of 14 she’s developed quite an artistic eye that I’ve come to envy. I’ve always enjoyed drawing, and I’m even pretty good at it. I earned a number of awards in high school, and I leverage my skills as an artist and illustrator with Caret Publications–I designed the cover of my novel, How Deep Lies the Shadow, and did the layout of the entire book. But enough about me. Beth is drawing all the time. Every free moment she has is spent with a...

Getting started with AuthorCentral

The word these days is that indie authors aren't just writers, they're entrepreneurs. And the great thing is there are so many tools out there that can help people like me get connected with the world. My latest discovery that I'm trying out is AuthorCentral by Amazon.com. This is a free tool that enables authors, whether their books are sold on Amazon or not, to host a website on Amazon.com (where the readers are) that you can customize to suit your own tastes. You can create a profile, post photos and videos, link to Twitter, host an RSS feed of your blog, and hold discussions with your fans. I just built my page tonight, so it's still a bit raw. I posted my standard photo and my book trailer for starts. I still need to flesh out my profile, so there's still work to be done. But honestly, this is the simplest tool I've come across to date that is designed for authors. It links me to my books to my blogs to my social networking. I have high hopes for this newly discovered tool. If you're a published author, indie or traditional, I highly recommend checking it out.

Three Takeaways from Tolkien

I wish I could say something original about Tolkien. I wish I could unveil some hidden mystery in his writings that would grasp the attention of the literary community. I wish I could say something new about the man that has not already been said. I'm not an expert on the Lord of the Rings, even though I have read it nine times - once for each member of the fellowship I suppose. I love the Hobbit and LOTR—but I struggled with the Silmarillion (which I just discovered is heading for the big screen), so I guess I'm not a full-fledged Tolkien fan. But never fret, I still have something to say on the matter.
